THE GREEK TRIP: DESCUBRIENDO SANTORINI

COLA, me parece increíble.

The time has come, the last of the posts about our Greek adventure, we are going to discover together the wonderful island of Santorini!

I had seen so many photos of this place that I really thought that reality had a hard time exceeding my imagination and, above all, my expectations. I couldn’t be more wrong.

It took me 3 seconds to realize that I had reached one of the most beautiful places that I have been lucky enough to visit. Days later, while I was in the pool, a couple arrived, and when they looked out at the boiler the girl said: omg, it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I promise you that it is not for less.

But let’s go in parts!

I will start by talking about accommodation. We quite doubted where to stay, you can choose between different locations, they are all very beautiful, but after reading traveler reviews and talking with friends who had already been to the island, we decided on Oia, without a doubt a great success.

The final phrase was: if you don’t stay in Oia, you will go there, you will see it, and you will want to return to Santorini soon to stay there. We stayed at Alexanders Suites, it’s about a five minute walk from the center, for my taste it was a magical stance. The views (as you can see in the photos) of the caldera and the Oia hillside are spectacular, our room was a suite in the highest part of the accommodation, although they also have other cave-type rooms (I leave you some photos so that you see them), they are typical on the island and they also have a lot of charm.

We had a beautiful terrace. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner there many days, as we also had a kitchen in our apartment and we were very sorry to miss out on it. On the terrace we had a private jacuzzi, and the hotel also has a beautiful infinity pool (where I spent a lot of time and where I would love to be now).

Breakfast is brought to your room, I want to make a special mention of Aqib, he made sure that our stance was absolutely unforgettable, always attentive and willing. It is wonderful to find accommodations that, regardless of their views and facilities, have staff who also do their jobs so well and with such human quality.

Personally (and even though the influx of tourists this year was much lower), I think our hotel has a privileged location, you are in Oia, next to the center, but not in the pure center, thousands of people pass through there. They take pictures, etc., and that seems a little less private to me.

On the other hand we also decided to rent a car, this time we took it with Blue Island Rental, we had a tiny car, but perfect for getting around the island! The rental service will wait for you at the airport with the car and you can leave it at the same point, something that makes it very comfortable.

On the subject of insurance in car rentals in Greece you can consult this post.

Although we spent most of our time in Oia, which had us in awe, there are other places to visit in Santorini that will also make us want to get to know the island more thoroughly.

We were one of the days in Imerovigli, we went there to get to Theoskepasti church. I will be very clear, since some of the posts that we read were misleading: you have to walk, quite a bit and the path is not exactly pink. I recommend you wear sports shoes (which we not did). The church is hanging from the cliff, there will be times when you will want to go back thinking that you have lost yourself, don’t do it, you will not see it until you are purely reaching it, yes, the journey will undoubtedly be worth it.

I leave you some photos and an explanation. I, who am a bit of a mountain goat (but very clumsy at the same time) was wanting to get on a roof to take typical photos that I had seen, but many times when it came down to it, I cowered. Either because it seemed to me that it was too high, or because it gave me qualms since there were people in the house whose roof I was going to climb, or I simply did not want to risk having a meeting with the police haha.

In this case, I can tell you that after the walk (about 45 minutes one way and another 45 minutes back), we arrived at the church (it seems that you are reaching the end of the world), and we were totally, completely and absolutely alone. So there, in the middle of the sea, with those views and the roof just a jump with a little push, I couldn’t resist. I have read in some blogs that in high season there is sometimes a queue to take photos there. QUEUE, I find it incredible. For us it was also a paradise because of its solitude and we enjoyed it very much.

We did not go to know any of the beaches, because they are more rocky and because to access some of them it’s necessary to take a boat, I encourage you to inform yourself well before planning this type of excursion.

Returning to Oia, my best recommendation is that you walk around it without haste and let yourself be fascinated by its corners. Warning to navigators, to take most of the typical beautiful photos of Instagram you will have to commit some small irregularity, which basically tends to be sneaking into a private property… I will not say that it’s okay, but at least when we went there was no nobody, we went in for a second, we took the photo and we left.

Something that you will definitely want to see are the sunsets. The most famous is the castle of Oia, okay, don’t go. You don’t have an idea of the amount of people that congregate. We approached when the sun had already set to take a photo. In a normal year, I would not have been amused by those atrocious people, but this year with the pandemic it seemed irresponsible, so we kept walking and watched the sunset from a few streets below. As you will see in the photo, the view of Oia from the castle is very beautiful, but it doesn’t deserve to risk your health.

And to finish, I want to leave this written here, so that in some time, when I reread this post, I get a smile. As I told you, we had dinner and ate many days in our hotel, the first night a baby kitten arrived crumbling, starving, at our door, so we let him go to the terrace and gave him something to eat. We found him so adorable that we named him Torini. Our surprise came the following days, because he didn’t miss an appointment! I was very sad to say goodbye to him, and I hope he is well, at least I know that he is enjoying that beautiful island, and that makes me happy!

I hope you like this post and it helps you! I just hope that very soon we can be traveling again and sharing adventures with you.

Lots of kisses!
