Sin haberlo planeado, este año he vivido un verano muy portugués (y os recuerdo que para mí, el verano no termina, como mínimo, hasta el mes de octubre, y hasta ahí puedo leer!).
A principios de agosto hicimos una pequeña ruta por alguna de las ciudades más bonitas del norte de Portugal, y hoy vengo a contárosla, como siempre compartiendo con vosotras qué fue lo que más me gustó de cada una de ellas.
Pero antes, una pequeña presentación, en este caso haremos un recorrigo por: Braga, Guimaraes, Porto, Coimbra y Chaves.
Este viaje lo hicimos en coche desde Asturias, se que para muchas el tema de los pejaes en Portugal es un auténtico quebradero de cabeza, por eso he creado unos stories destacados en mi instagram, donde os explico todo en detalle. Es muy sencillo y no me gustaría que nadie se perdiera un viaje así por desconocimiento, así que si con eso y todo os quedan dudas, podéis escribirme!
Braga
Pasamos una noche en la ciudad de las iglesias (tiene más de 40 y se la conoce como la ciudad de los arzobispos). Me encantaron sus calles, tan bien cuidadas, llenas de flores, sus plazas… Sin duda os recomiendo llegar al casco antiguo y simplemente pasear y dejaros sorprender.
Dos imprescindibles para mí en la ciudad: los jardines de Santa Bárbara, super cuidados y llenos de color y, por supuesto, Bom Jesus do Monte. Os dejo algunos tips sobre este último:
La famosa vista de las escaleras se consigue parando unos 2km antes de llegar al monasterio. Tenéis que aparcar el coche a un lado de la carretera (con cuidado) y desde ahí la tenéis, merece mucho la pena.
Si subís en coche hasta arriba, podéis aparcar pagando sólo 1 euro, muy recomendable. La vista de Braga desde el mirador es increíble, no cuesta dinero entrar a la basílica y además encontraréis una terraza super coqueta, con bebidas frías a muy buen precio y sandwiches muy buenos por sólo 4 euros, muy recomendable.
Guimaraes
Hicimos una breve parada, sólo un par de horas porque el calor apretaba bastante, pero fue el tiempo suficiente para recomendaros una visita. Es una ciudad de alma claramente medieval, muy coqueta y bien cuidada, por algo es patrimonio de la humanidad.
Oporto
Una sola noche no es tiempo suficiente en Oporto, pero es una ciudad que ya conocía. Si queréis ver muchas recomendaciones, os recomiendo ver estos posts de mi visita en 2019, encontraréis lugares preciosos.
Aunque 24 horas no seas suficientes, sí pueden aprovecharse bien, así que yo hice lo que más me gusta de la ciudad: buscar algún mirador nuevo, ver Oporto desde Vilanova de Gaia y al revés, cenar y comer con vistar al Duero, comer pasteis de nata y pasear por la ribera. Una ciudad increíble que, como os digo, merece una visita de, al menos 3 días.
Coimbra
Pasamos dos noches en esta bonita ciudad conocida por su tradición cultural.
Quiero hacer una mención especial a nuestro alojamiento aquí, nos hospedamos en el Hotel Oslo, y la experiencia no pudo ser mejor, sinceramente. Los motivos son varios: la preciosa terraza en la azotea del edificio, con unas vistas privilegiadas sobre toda la ciudad, desde el río Mondego hasta la universidad, sus desayunos (muy ricos y con variedad), sus habitaciones (super limpias y muy grandes, nos alojamos tres adultos y la habitación contaba con dos alcobas y un baño), el personal del establecimiento, muy atento y dispuesto a ayudar y, finalmente (pero no por eso menos importante), es pet friendly, por lo que pude disfrutar de todo ello con mi pequeña Abril.
Coimbra es una ciudad muy bonita que también invita a callejear y perderse por ella. Como advertencia (especialmente para personas con problemas de movilidad) es una ciudad con muchas cuestas (tanto o más que Oporto), pero no os preocupéis, siempre podéis optar por pedir un taxi y podréis llegar a cualquier punto de la ciudad.
Imprescindibles para mí: la vista desde la azotea del Hotel Oslo, la universidad (de la parte de pago, para mí lo más impresionante y que sí merece una visita sin duda, es la biblioteca Joanina (¿sabíais que en su interior viven familiar de murciélagos que la conservan? Muy impresionante), la plaza 8 de mayo y el jardin botánico (la entrada es gratuita y pueden entrar perritos, es como un jardín).
Chaves
Ya de vuelta a España pasamos una noche en el increíble Vidago Palace, y por la noche aprovechamos para acercarnos a cenar y a conocer Chaves. Siempre me falta un poco de perspectiva cuando visito una ciudad sólo por la noche, pero puedo deciros que la zona del puente trajano, aún en la oscuridad, me pareció increíble.

Without having planned it, this year I have experienced a very Portuguese summer (and I remind you that for me, summer doesn’t end, at least, until the month of October, and I can read until then!).
At the beginning of August we took a short route through some of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal, and today I come to tell you about it, as always sharing with you what I liked most about each of them. But first, a small presentation, in this case we will take a tour of: Braga, Guimaraes, Porto, Coimbra and Chaves.
We made this trip by car from Asturias, I know that for many the issue of tolls in Portugal is a real headache, that’s why I created some featured stories on my Instagram, where I explain everything in detail. It’s very simple and I wouldn’t like anyone to miss a trip like this due to ignorance, so if with that and everything you still have doubts, you can write to me!
Braga
We spent a night in the city of churches (it has more than 40 and is known as the city of archbishops). I loved its streets, so well maintained, full of flowers, its squares… I definitely recommend getting to the old town and simply walking around and letting yourself be surprised.
Two essentials for me in the city: the Santa Bárbara gardens, super cared for and full of color and, of course, Bom Jesus do Monte. I leave you some tips about the latter:
The famous view of the stairs is achieved by stopping about 2km before reaching the monastery. You have to park your car on the side of the road (carefully) and from there you have it, it’s very worth it.
If you drive up to the top, you can park for only 1 euro, highly recommended. The view of Braga from the viewpoint is incredible, it doesn’t cost any money to enter the basilica and you will also find a super cute terrace, with cold drinks at a very good price and very good sandwiches for only 4 euros, highly recommended.
Guimaraes
We made a brief stop, only a couple of hours because the heat was quite intense, but it was enough time to recommend a visit. It’s a city with a clearly medieval soul, very charming and well maintained, there is a reason why it is a world heritage site.
Porto
A single night is not enough time in Porto, but it’s a city that I already knew. If you want to see many recommendations, I recommend you see these posts from my visit in 2019, you will find beautiful places.
Although 24 hours are not enough, they can be used well, so I did what I like most about the city: look for a new viewpoint, see Porto from Vilanova de Gaia and vice versa, have dinner and lunch with a view of the Douro, eat pasteis of cream and walk along the riverbank.
An incredible city that, as I tell you, is worth a visit of at least 3 days.
Coimbra
We spent two nights in this beautiful city known for its cultural tradition. I want to make a special mention of our accommodation here, we stayed at the Oslo Hotel, and the experience couldn’t have been better, honestly.
The reasons are several: the beautiful terrace on the roof of the building, with privileged views over the entire city, from the Mondego River to the university, its breakfasts (very rich and varied), its rooms (super clean and very large, we were three adults and the room had two bedrooms and a bathroom), the staff of the establishment was very attentive and willing to help and, lastly (but not least), it’s pet friendly, so I was able to enjoy everything with my little April.
Coimbra is a very beautiful city that also invites you to wander around and get lost in it. As a warning (especially for people with mobility problems) it’s a city with many hills (as much or more than Porto), but don’t worry, you can always choose to order a taxi and you can get to any point in the city.
Essential for me: the view from the roof of the Oslo Hotel, the university (from the paying part, for me the most impressive and definitely worth a visit, is the Joanina library -did you know that family members of bats that preserve it? Very impressive-), the 8th may square and the botanical garden (entrance is free and dogs can enter, it’s like a garden).
Chaves
Back to Spain we spent a night at the incredible Vidago Palace, and at night we took the opportunity to have dinner and get to know Chaves. I always lack a little perspective when I visit a city only at night, but I can tell you that the Trajan Bridge area, even in the dark, seemed incredible to me.
